/var/log/messages on ubuntu 11.4

Why they do that?? Writing log's to /var/log/messages should be enabled by default...
To often I use this file to figure out what is going on. But there is simple solution for that:

vim /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf

and uncomment lines in section caled

# Some "catch-all" log files.
